NA Rowers Don’t Need A River to Race

Indoor Rowing Championships Bring Out Best in Pittsburgh-Area Athletes

North Allegheny’s Carson Middle School was the scene of intense competition on Saturday, March 06, 2004 as over 200 Pittsburgh-area rowers came together for the 5^th annual North Allegheny Indoor Rowing High School Championships. These athletes, representing 12 high school teams, battled to see who could pull the hardest and fastest in simulated 2000 meter rowing races.

The event was broken into a series of 18 races, which were based upon rowers’ experience level and weights. Participants were not only able to gauge their own level of fitness and skill, but also had a chance to see how they stack up against the competition they will meet on the water this spring.

NA rowers had strong performances throughout the day, capturing 9 medals in the women’s events and 11 in the men’s.

NA sophomore Joe Brendel had the top men’s time of the day and set an NA all-time men’s 2000-meter indoor rowing record with a time of 6:22.5. Oakland Catholic senior Amanda Polk finished with the top women’s time, pulling a stunning 7:08.2. NA freshman Kathleen Janosco set a new North Allegheny freshman indoor all-time best for 2000 meters with a time of 7:50.6. Both Brendel and Polk’s times put them at top-20 level for high school rowers in the U.S.

Visiting teams included Central Catholic, Ellis, Fox Chapel, Hampton, Mt. Lebanon, North Catholic, Oakland Catholic, Pine-Richland, Steel City, Taylor-Allderdice and Upper St. Clair.
