Team History

Last updated Apr 2008

The NA Rowing Team was the first of over 14 high school rowing programs in Pittsburgh. Every year, it seems like the team is growing stronger and getting larger.  This section of the web site is to give you general information about the NA Rowing Team.  The team rows out of the Groveton boathouse on the Ohio River near Neville Island.  Are you looking for directions to the boathouse?    If you are unfamiliar with the sport of rowing, read our Rowing 101 pages.  Our rowing term glossary is a great way to catch up on rowing vocabulary.

Early Beginnings

The North Allegheny High School was the first high school in the Pittsburgh area to form a rowing team. A small band of students began rowing as a lifetime activity in 1989 on Washington's Landing. In those early days, the team borrowed well-worn equipment which was stored in old trailers. We became recognized as a club sport in 2001.

NARA Established

Still a club sport, the North Allegheny Rowing Team is largely successful because of a well organized parents' group, dedicated coaches, and enthusiastic student-athletes. The club is officially known as the North Allegheny Rowing Association, a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. NARA owns 4 eights, 4 fours, 4 quads, 4 doubles and 4 singles.

Cancellations

To find out whether practice or activities are cancelled, please follow NA School District policy. As a general rule, if school is cancelled, so are any NARA activities for that day, and the Baierl Center will be closed. This website may not always list current cancellations. Check the NA Cancellations page for the latest info.
