Ten NA Rowers Win Medals at World’s Largest High School Regatta

Friday, May 20 & Saturday, May 21, 2005

Over 5000 young rowers converged on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia for two days of competition at the 79th annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the oldest and largest high school rowing event in the world.  Three of North Allegheny’s crews captured top finishes, with gold medals in the Men’s Junior Quad and the Men’s Senior Double and a silver medal in the Women’s Senior Quad.   The NA Men’s Junior Double took a fifth-place spot.

Against top teams from 180 high schools representing 11 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, the Tigers qualified 10 of their 11 boats for the semi-finals, including the Men's Freshman Eight, the Men's Single, the Junior and Senior Men's Doubles, the Junior and Senior Women's Doubles, the Junior and Senior Men's Quads and the Junior and Senior Women's Quads.

Gold medallists were Andrew Kaiser, Sean Barunas, Rory Dahl, Joseph Brendel, Bill Francis and Singen Elliott.  Silver medal winners were Katie Hodnik, Megan Hudson, Sharon Dauson and Ali Bogart.  Brian Maskrey and Ian Levy were finalists.

Congratulations to the whole NA Rowing Team, men’s team head coach Melissa Titus, women’s team head coach Don Heckenstaller, and assistant coaches Aaron LeDonne and Megan Batykefer.

This regatta concludes the Tigers regular spring competition season.  Selected crews will be going on to US Rowing National Youth Invitationals in Cincinnati next month.
