NA Rowers Take Three Medals at Largest High School Regatta

Friday and Saturday, May 19 & 20, 2006

North Allegheny’s rowers captured three medals - a gold, a silver and a bronze - at this weekend’s Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia.  For the second year in a row, the Tigers took gold in the Men’s Junior Quad and repeated the silver medal in the Women’s Senior Quad as

well.  They rounded out their medals portfolio with a bronze in the Men’s Senior Quad.  The Men’s Junior Double and Women’s Junior Quad had fourth-place finishes.

NA took 11 boats to the 80th annual Stotesbury Cup, the world’s oldest and largest high school regatta, and placed five of them into the finals.  Against top-notch competition from a field of over 4700 competitors representing 14 states and 3 countries, the Tigers also advanced their Women’s Junior Double, Men’s and Women’s Senior Doubles, and Men’s Junior Eight to the semi-finals.  The Women’s Junior Four and Men’s Senior Single both raced against some of the largest slates of competitors and both finished just out of the top half of the field.

Men’s head coach Melissa Titus was pleased with the team’s performance.  “This is definitely solid results for NA.  The fact that our kids were able to repeatedly out-row powerful private school teams from all over the East Coast shows just how strong the NA program really is.”

Don Heckenstaller, women’s team head coach, echoed Titus’ sentiments.  “I’m very proud of how tough all of our kids rowed this weekend.  You don’t achieve these kinds of results at Stotesbury Cup without a lot of hard work and a lot of heart.”

This event concludes the regular spring season for the Tiger Rowers.  Select crews will participate in USRowing Youth Invitationals in Cincinnati, Ohio in June.

The team will offer three free learn-to-row days this summer for all interested incoming NA 8th, 9th and 10th graders.  See the team’s website for more details, www.narowing.org.
