Tigers Rowers Take Five Medals at Head of the Ohio

Saturday, October 6, 2007

Coach Mike Bergen’s Tigers rowed tough right from the start at Saturday’s 21st Head of the Ohio Regatta.  They started the day by capturing back-to-back gold medals in the Men’s and Women’s High School Doubles events.  They added three more medals in the afternoon by taking the silver in both the Men’s and Women’s High School Quads and the bronze in the men’s event.

Head of the Ohio is a major fall rowing event held on a 2.6 mile course along Pittsburgh’s Allegheny River.  Over 80 high school, college, club and corporate teams from 15 US states and Canadian provinces took part in this year’s regatta.  In winning their medals, NA bettered competition that included local crews from Fox Chapel, Upper St. Clair, Central Catholic, North Catholic, Shaler, Winchester Thurston and Ellis.  NA’s men’s and women’s quads were both edged out for the gold by very experienced crews from St. Catherine’s, a Canadian club program, making NA the top-finishing US crews in both events.

The Tigers next will host Steel City Rowing Club and other invited teams for a scrimmage at NA’s boathouse on Saturday, October 20.
