What are the season(s) for rowing?

Rowing is a two season sport. In the Fall season, we recruit new rowers and teach technique. The season usually lasts from early September till early November. We also compete in two or three races in the fall.

For the Spring season, we begin training on land in early January. We recruit additional new rowers in early February.  We train on rowing machines, do strength training circuits, and use the climbing wall. Weather permitting, we usually get back on the water for practice in late March, early April. We usually compete in five races in April and May.

Do I have to participate in both seasons?

We prefer that you compete in both the Spring and Fall seasons, but we know that is not always possible for those students who compete in other sports. The most important season is the Spring, when we focus on the national competitions. There is not much time to practice in the spring before racing starts, so it's important to work on technique some time in the fall and winter. We have had rowers successfully compete in races in the Spring who started practicing on the rowing machines in February.

Is rowing a varsity sport?

No.  We are, however, a fully sanctioned club sport recognized by the North Allegheny School District. Our designation as a club sport allows us to compete in national and international events. Conversely, NA only recognizes WPIAL and PIAA events for varsity sports. Rowers who meet certain criteria are awarded varsity letters and are recognized by NA as Scholar Athletes.

Where and when do you practice?

Fall season practices are held at Groveton Boat Club near Neville Island. We practice Monday through Thursdays and Saturdays.  Practices are generally two hours each for men and women.  Bus transportation is provided between the North Allegheny Senior High School (NASH) and Groveton.

Winter practices are held at the Baierl Center for Excellence, located next to the stadium on the NASH campus.  Days and times are typically finalized by mid-December.

Once the weather cooperates, all spring practices follow the same schedule as the fall season.

How much does it cost?

Because we are a club sport, school district financial support is minimal. We are a completely parent-run organization, and our parents' committee sets the dues and estimates the costs of each race. The dues for the 2007-2008 school year were $ 275 per season.  There are some additional costs for team trips to out-of-town races.   Through fundraising activities during the year, rowers have the opportunity to defray some, or all, of their rowing expenses.

What's in it for my parents?

NA Rowing depends on the time and talent of our parents at every turn.   From towing boat trailers, to providing food for regattas, to managing the equipment, uniforms and travel of the team, our parents show their support.   Fortunately, the rewards are great!  Through monthly parents' meetings, we keep parents informed of what's happening in the life of the team and give them a voice in team activities.  There are lots of opportunities to volunteer and lots of cameraderie with other parents.

So, if you're looking for a team where athletes and parents can both make a difference, NA Rowing is for you!
