The North Allegheny Rowing Team is sponsored by

North Allegheny School District

The NA Rowing Team was the first of over 14 high school rowing programs in Pittsburgh. Every year, it seems like the team is growing stronger and getting larger.  This section of the web site is to give you general information about the NA Rowing Team.  The team rows out of the Groveton boathouse on the Ohio River near Neville Island.  Are you looking for directions to the boathouse?    If you are unfamiliar with the sport of rowing, read our About Rowing pages.  Our rowing term glossary is a great way to catch up on rowing vocabulary.

Purpose

The purpose of the North Allegheny Rowing Association (NARA) is to provide an activity where students can have fun, make lasting friendships, improve self-confidence and self-esteem, learn the value of "team", compete on a regional and national basis, and experience success. All of our students have an opportunity to compete at their level of ability. Our coaches' philosophy is very simple:

" Winning medals is good; racing is better; loving the sport is best."

Early Beginnings

The North Allegheny High School was the first high school in the Pittsburgh area to form a rowing team. A small band of students began rowing as a lifetime activity in 1989 on Washington's Landing. In those early days, the team borrowed well-worn equipment which was stored in old trailers. We became recognized as a club sport in 2001.

NARA Established

Still a club sport, the North Allegheny Rowing Team is largely successful because of a well organized parents' group, dedicated coaches, and enthusiastic student-athletes. The club is officially known as the North Allegheny Rowing Association, a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. NARA owns 4 eights, 4 fours, 4 quads, 4 doubles and 4 singles.
